Many are not aware that May is Mental Health Month. For more than 60 years during the month of May, time is taken to raise awareness for those with mental health conditions and improving wellness through mental health. In recent years we have focused exclusively on reducing the stigma of mental health conditions. According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 adults will experience a mental illness in a year. Mental illnesses include many different conditions that range from mild to severe. Too often, people do not know there is a problem. Partly because problems with emotions or behavior are tolerated for too long; or, seeking help is discouraged. Regardless of awareness, the challenges of mental illness persist with individuals, families, and communities. It is a hidden stressor and unrealistic burden for anyone to bear alone. Perhaps, we do not see any signs or changes in others, because we sometimes see ourselves. A mirroring of expression of emotions and behaviors in a way. It is tough to admit what we see and acknowledge we cannot fix all of the issues by ourselves.
Talking about mental health issues is still not an everyday day conversation. We are desperately trying to change that. Maybe we can rise above the stigma of mental health and ask for help. Admit that something is just not right. Reach out to a friend, colleague, spouse, or professional and just talk. Will you be the role model? Throughout the month of May, there will be a lot of information and resources to inform you about the importance of mental health. Once the month is gone, the issues of mental health will still be here. If you are experiencing what you may think are some signs of depression, or something else, or you think a friend may be, there are plenty of resources available. It is better to seek help and be wrong than to remain silent.
